Holyrood Park
( Do not miss ) Once a royal hunting preserve, Holyrood Park, which includes Arthur's Seat, is unique among city parks. No other European city can boast a piece of wild countryside, complete with three lochs, dramatic cliffs and open moorland, within a stone's throw of its heart. When museums and sightseeing pall you can escape to the park to picnic, walk, feed the ducks and geese or simply relax and do nothing. Queen's Drive, built at the instigation of Prince Albert, runs right around the park and up towards Arthur's Seat; a pleasant drive, it's closed to all commercial vehicles. At its highest point you'll find Dunsapie Loch, another of Albert's inspirations. Don't miss St Margaret's Well, a medieval Gothic structure near Holyrood Palace where a clear spring wells from beneath sculpted vaulting. Address: Holyrood Park Phone: 0131 556 3407 Open: Open 24 hours, 365 days a year, but no vehicular access to Dunsapie Loch on Sun Bus: 1, 6, 36, 69. 85 Admission: Free Other: Arthur's Seat Duddingston; Dynamic Earth; Holyrood Abbey ; Palace of Holyroodhouse; Royal Mile |
