Driving is the simplest way to get to Swanston, perhaps the prettiest of all Edinburgh's `villages' and barely part of the city at all. Separated from the urban sprawl by the southern bypass and lying on the slopes of the Pentlands, the centre of this conservation village has changed little since the 19th century. A group of thatched cottages clusters round the village green together with the original 18th-century farmhouse and old school. Swanston is best known for its links with Robert Louis Stevenson; he came to spend the summers here annually with his family and nurse from 1867 to 1880.
