John Knox's House

( Worth Seeing )

Whether or not the key figure in Scotland's 16th-century Reformation actually died in the the building known as John Knox's House is open to debate, but the tradition was enough to prevent the destruction of this fine 1450 burgh house, all overhanging gables and picturesque windows. Today, it houses an exhibition on the complex subject of the Scottish Reformation, complete with an audio re-enactment of Knox's famous audience with Mary, Queen of Scots, when he condemned the Mass and her love of dancing. You can also learn about the house's other famous inhabitant, James Mossman, the goldsmith who made the Scottish Crown. He was probably responsible for the lovely carved frieze on the exterior that reads: LOVE. GOD. ABVFE. AL. AND. YI. NYCHTBOVR. AS. YI. SELF.
