Royal scottish Observatory

( Worth Seeing )

The Royal Scottish Observatory moved from Calton Hill in 1895 when light pollution was starting to interfere with observations from the city-centre site. This is still very much a working observatory, charged with the task of collating material for astronomers world-wide from the UK's telescopes here and overseas, and housing sophisticated equipment. There's an excellent visitor centre, which will keep even those theoretically uninterested in astronomy fascinated for hours, and children will enjoy the multimedia gallery, which has plenty of hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. The roof terrace has far-reaching views north to the city centre; if you're in Edinburgh during the winter, there are weekly Friday-evening view-ing sessions at the observatory.
